Many pastors and Bible teachers hunger to handle the Old Testament with more confidence—in the same way that New Testament writers handle it, in a way that understands how and why the New Testament writers treat the Old Testament as they do, and so arrive at Jesus and the Gospel. We might have begun by working through a number of New Testament passages where the Old is quoted, but we decided to start at the other end.
This way we may hope to model how a selection of Old Testament texts might be taught or preached—all in the hope of better learning how to teach and preach the whole counsel of God, how to become workers who do not need to be ashamed as we handle the Word of truth.

Paige Benton BrownPaige Benton Brown (M.A. Covenant Theological Seminary) is a native of Cleveland, MS. She completed a Masters degree at Covenant Theological Seminary after graduating from the University of Mississippi. Paige served on staff with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Vanderbilt University for many years, and again at the University of Virginia. In between campuses, she was a teacher on staff at Park Cities Presbyterian church in Dallas, Texas. After a couple of years in New York City, Paige and her husband, Reagan, now live in the Washington D.C. area with their two small children.
Mike BullmoreMike Bullmore (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is the founding pastor of CrossWay Community Church in Bristol, WI. Mike served for 15 years as an associate professor of Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, as well as chairman of the Practical Theology Department at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. Dr. Bullmore, a Kenosha native, lives in his childhood home with his wife, Beverly, and their three children, Abigail, Madeline, and Graham.
Don CarsonDon Carson (Ph.D., University of Cambridge) is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He has been at Trinity since 1978. Carson came to Trinity from the faculty of Northwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he also served for two years as academic dean. He has served as assistant pastor and pastor and has done itinerant ministry in Canada and the United Kingdom. Carson is co-founder (with Tim Keller) and president of The Gospel Coalition. Carson and his wife, Joy, reside in Libertyville, Illinois. They have two children. In his spare time, Carson enjoys reading, hiking, and woodworking.
Matt ChandlerMatt Chandler is the pastor of The Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. Before coming to The Village Church, Matt served as the teacher of the Grace Bible Study, an inter-denominational ministry for college students in Abilene, TX. He has also served on staff at two other churches in Texas. Matt is a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. He and his wife Lauren live with their three children in Highland Village, TX.
Bryan ChapellBryan Chapell (Ph.D., Southern Illinois University) has served as President of Covenant Seminary since 1994. He began teaching at Covenant Seminary in 1984 after ten years in pastoral ministry. Before becoming President, he served for six years as Vice President for Academics and Dean of Faculty. He is much sought after as a speaker in churches and conferences around the country. His book Christ-Centered Preaching has established him as one of the nation’s most recognized teachers of homiletics. At Covenant, Dr. Chapell teaches the introductory homiletics courses and several practicums, giving every M.Div. student the opportunity to study under him.
K. Edward CopelandK. Edward Copeland (J.D., University of California, Berkeley) is the Senior Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Rockford, IL. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California at Berkley and a Masters of Divinity from Golden Gate Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, CA. He is the author of Riding in the Second Chariot, a guidebook for associate ministers and ministry leaders. He is married to the former Starla Lynn Starks and they have three beautiful children, William Jibri (God’s Hero), Abeni (We pray for her arrival) and Titus Omari (Pleasant/New Beginning).
Mark DeverMark Dever (Ph.D., University of Cambridge) serves as the senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC. He is the president of 9Marks Ministries and has taught at a number of seminaries. Dever has authored several books and articles, including It Is Well: Expositions on Substitionary Atonement (co-author), The Gospel and Personal Evangelism, and Nine Marks of a Healthy Church. He and his wife Connie live and minister with their son, Nathan, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
Kevin DeYoungKevin DeYoung (M.Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) has been the senior pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, MI, since August 2004. Prior to serving at URC, Kevin was the Associate Pastor at First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. Craig DyerCraig Dyer in April 2008, after nearly 20 years serving as pastor in Scotland, 13 of these years in Harper Memorial Church in the south side of Glasgow, became training director with Christianity Explored. Kent Hughes (D.D., Biola University) is Senior Pastor Emeritus of College Church in Wheaton and the series editor for the projected 50 volume Preaching the Word series, to which he has contributed numerous volumes. Tim KellerTim Keller (D.Min., Westminster Theological Seminary) is the senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. Keller was raised in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, and holds degrees from Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary, where he received his D.Min. Pastor Tim became a Christian at Bucknell owing to the ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, with which he later served as a staff member. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and served as a pastor in Virginia for nine years, while also serving as director of church planting for the PCA. Julius KimJulius Kim (Ph.D., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is Dean of Students and Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Seminary California. Prior to taking his current position at Westminster Seminary California, Dr. Kim ministered in a variety of ecclesiastical and academic settings. He has served in Presbyterian Church in America churches in California and Illinois. His current church calling is as Associate Pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido. Crawford LorittsCrawford Loritts (D.D., Biola University) is the senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, GA. In 1978, he joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) serving as a traveling speaker, ministering to both college students and the lay community. Currently Crawford serves as Associate Director, CCC-USA. Conrad MbeweConrad Mbewe is the pastor of Kabwata Reformed Baptist Church in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa. He is widely regarded as the African Spurgeon. Conrad is the editor of Reformation Zambia magazine and writes three columns in two weekly national newspapers. Kathleen B. NielsonKathleen B. Nielson (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is a native of St. Louis, MO, and holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in literature from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. from Wheaton College. Dr. Nielson has taught in the English departments at Vanderbilt University, Bethel College (MN), and Wheaton College. Ray Ortlund Jr.Ray Ortlund (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) is Lead Pastor of Immanuel Church in Nashville, TN. Pastor Ortlund received a B.A. from Wheaton College, Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, M.A. from The University of California, Berkeley, and Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Ortlund served as Associate Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, from 1989-1998. He has been married to Jan Giles Ortlund for thirty-eight happy years, and they have four grown children.
Darrin PatrickDarrin Patrick is the vice president of the Acts 29 Church Planting Network and the founding pastor of the Journey Church in St. Louis. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Covenant Seminary and has served in ministry for twenty years and speaks regularly at pastor’s conferences and training events for church planters. He is also the author of Church Planter: the man the message and the mission.
Tony PayneTony Payne serves as the publishing director for Matthias Media, an evangelical publisher of gospel-centered resources. Payne began work as Matthias Media’s first editor in 1988. David PowlisonDavid Powlison (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is a faculty member at the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF) and previously served as the editor of The Journal of Biblical Counseling. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a M.Div. degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. David has been counseling for over thirty years. He has written numerous articles on biblical counseling and on the relationship between faith and psychology. His books include Speaking Truth in Love; Seeing with New Eyes; Power Encounters: Reclaiming Spiritual Warfare; and The Biblical Counseling Movement: History and Context. David is an adjunct professor at Westminster Theological Seminary and has taught across the United States and in Korea, India, Brazil, Europe, and Sri Lanka. David and his wife, Nan, have a son, two daughters, and one granddaughter.
Phil RykenPhil Ryken (D.Phil., University of Oxford) serves as the eighth president of Wheaton College. Before this Ryken served as senior minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He is a Bible teacher for the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, speaking nationally on the radio program Every Last Word. Dr. Ryken is also a graduate of Wheaton College (B.A.) and Westminster Theological Seminary (M.Div.). A prolific writer, Ryken’s recent books include, Discovering God in the Stories of the Bible and Ecclesiastes: Why Everything Matters in Crossway’s Preaching the Word series. Ryken is husband to Lisa and father to children Josh, Kirsten, Kathryn, and Karoline.
Jenny SaltJenny Salt (M.Div., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) hails from Sydney, Australia, and is a proud Aussie! She also has a soft spot for Chicago after living there on and off for a few years between 2003 and 2009, while studying for her M. Div. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Since 1997 Jenny has served at Sydney Missionary and Bible College, for most of that time as Dean of Women but most recently as Dean of Students. Jenny’s ministry extends to women’s conferences throughout Australia as well as in South Africa and New Zealand. Her passion is expository Bible teaching as well as equipping other women to do the same. Jenny has contributed to a number of books, including How to Write a Bible Talk and What Women Really Need. She loves spending time with her family (including six nieces and nephews) and making the most of the numerous walkways around Sydney Harbour.
Juan SanchezJuan Sanchez (Th.M., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the preaching pastor at High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, a multi-ethnic congregation with both a local and a global focus to see all peoples become whole-hearted followers of Jesus Christ. Juan has also served local churches in Florida, Georgia, and Indiana. He is also a Ph.D. candidate in systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. It presents a Christ to whom we can come. Observing that many in his day preached Christ only as an example to follow, Luther said, Rather ought Christ to be preached to the end that faith in Him may be established that he may not only be Christ, but be Christ for you and me. Luther’s observation is insightful for us. A moral example cannot help the weak, comfort the sorrowful, heal the broken-hearted, release the captive, or forgive the penitent. Our calling is to proclaim a Christ to whom sinners can come and in whom we may find life, hope, help and peace.

In many ways, our moral context is remarkably similar to that in which the gospel first appeared. Appeals to traditional morality or to moralistic self-effort to resist the tide are not only futile; they miss the power and purpose of the gospel. We will consider how the gospel calls us to embrace the goodness of God’s gift of sexuality while facing honestly the destructive impact of sin on our sexuality. Determining the mission of the church is a deceptively difficult problem. In this session we argue that the mission of the church is adequately summarized in the Great Commissions. We strongly support deeds of mercy and love, but we must understand these in the right theological categories. If we rightly understand key concepts like kingdom, gospel, and social justice, we will be better able to understand what the mission of the church is. And just as importantly, we’ll be able to pursue obedience to Christ in a way that is more realistic, more freeing, and, in the long run, more fruitful.

The story of Jesus is the story of the whole Bible. And the whole Bible is the narrative of the whole gospel. In this seminar Professors Lints and Um consider the nature, scope, and rationale for thinking about Biblical Theology as the story of the gospel unfolded across the whole of Scripture. The progressive movement of the narrative of redemption helps to understand the gospel with greater depth and with greater practical value. They will follow out the ways in which the Bible intertwines the themes of kingdom, covenant, and temple from Genesis to Revelation. And they will consider why Biblical Theology matters in the ministries of preaching, teaching, and mission.

God-Given Growth: A Pre-Conference on Church Planting

The Gospel Coalition invites pastors, planters, potential planters, and lay leaders to God-Given Growth, a time of teaching and discussion that will celebrate God’s work to advance his gospel through launching and relaunching Christ-centered churches.
The talks and roundtable discussion, moderated by Scott Kauffmann, will feature four pastors with decades of combined planting, re-planting, and pastoring experience. Darrin Patrick, Dave Harvey, Mike McKinley, and Tullian Tchividjian will cover the church leader’s mission, character, practices, and prayer. Be sure to come with questions for the roundtable Q&A.

Mary Kassian
Mary Kassian is an author, speaker, and professor at Southern Baptist Seminary. She has published several books, Bible studies and videos, including: In My Father’s House: Finding Your Heart’s True Home, Conversation Peace, Vertically Inclined, and the Feminist Mistake. Born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, Mary graduated from the faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta, Canada, and has studied systematic theology at the doctoral level. She speaks at conferences nationally and internationally, and has appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including Focus on the Family, Family Life Today, and Marriage Uncensored. She and her husband, Brent – chaplain for a professional football team – enjoy a life full of athletics and adventure with their three sons.

Jenny Salt
Jenny Salt hails from Sydney, Australia, and is a proud Aussie! She also has a soft spot for Chicago after living there on and off for a few years between 2003 and 2009, while studying for her M. Div. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Since 1997 Jenny has served at Sydney Missionary and Bible College, for most of that time as Dean of Women but most recently as Dean of Students. Jenny’s ministry extends to women’s conferences throughout Australia as well as in South Africa and New Zealand. Her passion is expository Bible teaching as well as equipping other women to do the same. Jenny has contributed to a number of books, including How to write a Bible Talk and What Women Really Need. She loves spending time with her family (including six nieces and nephews) and making the most of the numerous walkways around Sydney Harbour.
Nancy Guthrie
Nancy Guthrie is a Bible teacher and author of seven books, including Holding On to Hope, The One Year Book of Hope, Hopingfor Something Better, When Your Family’s Lost a Loved One, Dinner Table Devotions and Discussion-Starters, Hearing Jesus Speak into Your Sorrow, and Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament. Nancy and her husband, David, are hosts of the GriefShare video series used in over 6,000 churches nationwide for small group ministry to grieving people. They also host Respite Retreat, a retreat ministry for couples who have experienced the death of a child. Along with their 20-year-old son, Matt, the Guthries are members of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee.
Kathleen B. Nielson
A native of St. Louis, MO, Kathleen Nielson holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in literature from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. from Wheaton College. She has taught in the English departments at Vanderbilt University, Bethel College (MN), and Wheaton College. Kathleen is the author of numerous Living Word Bible studies (P&R Publishing), as well as various articles and poems. A book about the process of Bible study will be published by P&R in January 2011. Kathleen speaks extensively at women’s conferences, and has directed and taught women’s Bible studies at several churches. She loves being involved with the community of Covenant College (GA), where her husband Niel serves as president. The Nielsons have three grown sons and two beautiful daughters-in-law.
Paige Benton Brown
A native of Cleveland, MS, Paige Brown completed a Masters degree at Covenant Theological Seminary after graduating from the University of Mississippi. She served on staff with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Vanderbilt University for many years, and again at the University of Virginia. In between campuses, she was a teacher on staff at Park Cities Presbyterian church in Dallas, Texas. After a couple of years in New York City, Paige and her husband, Reagan, now live in the Washington D.C. area with their two small children.
Randy Newman
Randy has been with the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ since 1980 and currently serves with Faculty Commons, their ministry to university professors. He ministers on campuses and elsewhere in our nation’s capital to students, professors and policy shapers. His teaching responsibilities have included serving with the Chaplain’s office at the Pentagon. He is an honors graduate from Temple University with a degree in Music Education. He also holds a M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He lives in Annandale, Virginia with his wife Pam and their three sons. He is the author of numerous articles and the books Questioning Evangelism: Engaging People’s Hearts the Way Jesus Did and Corner Conversations: Engaging Dialogues about God and Life, both published by Kregel, and Bringing the Gospel Home: Witnessing to Family Members, Close Friends, and Other People You Can’t Fool, forthcoming from Crossway.
Bob Doll
Bob Doll is Vice Chairman, Chief Equity Strategist, and Senior Portfolio Manager at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management firm. Bob appears regularly in the national financial press discussing economic developments and markets. He is also choir director at Westerly Road Church in Princeton, New Jersey. Bob serves on a number of boards including the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, Word of Life Fellowship, New Canaan Society and Kingdom Advisors.
Michael Oh
Dr. Michael Oh is president of CBI Japan in Nagoya, Japan (cbijapan.org/jointheteam). Michael attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate where he also received a Master’s degree and Ph.D. Michael completed his M.Div. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School as well as a Master’s degree in East Asian Studies at Harvard University. Michael is a PCA Teaching Elder and serves on the executive board of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization.
Eric Mason
Eric Mason is the founder and lead pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia, PA. He also serves on the boards of the Acts 29 Network and Reach Life Ministries. Dr. Mason received his Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary (2000) and his D.Min. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2007). Dr. Mason resides in Philadelphia, PA with his wife Yvette and his two sons Immanuel and Nehemiah.
R. Kent Hughes
Kent Hughes is Senior Pastor Emeritus of College Church in Wheaton and the series editor for the projected 50 volume Preaching the Word series, to he has contributed numerous volumes. He regularly teaches preaching in seminaries and theological colleges and also lectures for the Charles Simeon Trust’s Workshops on Biblical Exposition. The joys of serial exposition have motivated and sustained him throughout his long ministry.
Keith and Kristyn Getty
Keith and Kristyn Getty have been at the forefront of the modern hymn movement over the past decade, bridging the gap between the traditional and the contemporary. They currently live in the United States where they have just finished their second album together, Awaken the Dawn, a collection of hymns that takes believers on a lyrical journey of grace and hope for all the nations. This follows their first collection of hymns, the 2006 release In Christ Alone. Kristyn’s lilting, crystal-clear voice is an ideal contrast to Keith’s richly melodic piano arrangements and accompaniment. An acclaimed soloist in her own right, today she is both an accomplished songwriter and artist, having penned children’s musicals and been featured with Christian music’s Margaret Becker and Celtic artist Joanne Hogg on the New Irish Hymns series, among her diverse credits. A multi-talented instrumentalist and composer, Keith first learned to play guitar, but later studied flute, including a summer masterclass under renowned Irish flautist Sir James Galway. Ironically, it was Keith’s piano not flute arrangements that most intrigued Galway and helped open the world of the music industry to him. Keith has since orchestrated and arranged more than 200 projects for recordings, concerts, theater, television and film, including arrangements for Michael W. Smith’s 2004 Healing Rain album, as well as producing and composing (with Kristyn) various projects for the internationally renowned African Children’s Choir. Though he was raised in a Christian home in Northern Ireland, it was ultimately a yearlong study of the life of Christ during his time at university that affirmed and crystallized Keith’s faith. Since then, he has nurtured a passion to communicate the basic tenets of the gospel through music in a universally appealing way.
John Mahaffey
John Mahaffey is a former missionary to the Philippines and the Lead Pastor of West Highland Baptist Church in Hamilton Ontario. For eighteen years he pastored Morningstar Christian Fellowship, a multicultural church in Toronto, Canada, comprised of people from over seventy nations.
