Many pastors and Bible teachers hunger to handle the Old Testament with more confidence—in the same way that New Testament writers handle it, in a way that understands how and why the New Testament writers treat the Old Testament as they do, and so arrive at Jesus and the Gospel. We might have begun by working through a number of New Testament passages where the Old is quoted, but we decided to start at the other end.

This way we may hope to model how a selection of Old Testament texts might be taught or preached—all in the hope of better learning how to teach and preach the whole counsel of God, how to become workers who do not need to be ashamed as we handle the Word of truth.

Thabiti AnyabwileThe Gospel for MuslimsThabiti Anyabwile
God seems pleased to bring the Muslim world right to our doorsteps. With some confidence in and reliance upon the God and His gospel, we may yet be the generation that sees history’s greatest revival among Muslim peoples. This is not a ‘how-to’ workshop, but an exploration of the gospel itself with particular application to questions and ideas our Muslim neighbors often have.

Gospel Faithfulness and Business Leadership in Tumultuous TimesBob Doll
Too often there is a large gulf between our “faith on Sunday” and our “work on Monday.” This workshop is designed to examine God’s intentions for work – how it is an integral part of the believer’s walk with Christ. We will discuss how work itself, along with our conduct and character at work, are critical parts of who we are as children of the most high God, especially in these tumultuous times.

Christianity Explored – A Biblical Strategy for Effective, Sustainable Evangelism in the Local ChurchCraig Dyer, Alistair Begg
Discover why Mark’s gospel is such a powerful evangelistic tool and how to train the whole church family to explain the Identity, Mission and Call of the Lord Jesus from Mark as we let the gospel tell the gospel.

Craig Dyer Alistair Begg

Is Your Church a Safe Place for Sad People? Learning to Walk with Each Other Through LossNancy Guthrie
How should we suggest our church members pray for those facing terminal illness? How can church members overcome the awkwardness of interacting with those going through a divorce or grieving the death of a spouse or child? How do we keep from being that person who said the wrong thing to someone who’s lost a loved one? How do we help those who have gone through a very public trial get back to normal in the life of our church? These are the kinds of questions we’ll explore as we consider how to apply the grace and truth of the gospel in times of heartache and loss.

Signs of Grace in Inner-City Church PlantingEric Mason
This seminar will address the unique demands of ministering the gospel in the city through both preaching the gospel and practicing the implications of the gospel. How is the gospel communicated to glocal cities, and and how does the gospel impact the city regionally and locally? We will spend time exploring how the church practices that preaching of the gospel in that city. This workshop seeks to balance both the theology and the practice.

Orphans and AdoptionRussell Moore, Voddie Baucham
Adoption and orphan care are not just for families who want children or for families who want more children. Adoption and orphan care have everything do with the gospel itself, and with the mission of the church. This seminar will explore how our care for orphans can lead our churches to be more missional and gospel-centered, and how the recovery of the gospel can refocus the church on care for the least of these, the fatherless of the world.

Voddie Baucham

Old Testament Narrative: Letting the Literature SpeakKathleen B. Nielson
If the light of Christ shines through the whole biblical text, how best should we go about finding it – particularly within the genre of Old Testament narrative? What questions should we raise first, to find a story’s relation to the big storyline of Scripture? How best can we avoid the pitfalls of wrong or simplistic interpretation? How do we make good application of gospel truths from these Old Testament narratives? Such questions will be applied specifically to the books of Ruth and Esther. The goal in this seminar, which aims to enable women to help other women handle Scripture well, will be to encourage lively, productive, Christ-centered study of this particular genre.

Justification Versus Self-JustificationRay Ortlund
Self-justification is the deepest impulse in the fallen human heart. Only the extreme grace of the gospel can begin to free us from our compulsive self-justifications, with their social pathologies. Drawing upon Paul’s letter to the Galatians, Ray will contrast the dynamics of justification with those of self-justification.

The Pastor’s Counseling MinistryDavid Powlison
In most of what the Gospels show, Jesus’ ministry unfolds interactively. We observe and hear two-way conversations, as well as one-way proclamation. Preaching is part of proclamatory ministry; counseling is part of conversational ministry. Both are necessary for God’s people to grow up into the wisdom of Christ. How do ministries of conversation—care and cure of souls—personalize the Scriptures to individual life circumstances and struggles?

Women Teaching Women the Bible: A Suggested ModelJenny Salt
This seminar is designed for women who are concerned to teach the Word of God faithfully to other women in such a way that demonstrates a deep commitment to the authority and centrality of Scripture. It will focus on principles to ensure that our Bible talks are driven by the text and not simply a ‘launching pad’ for whatever topic is the latest trend. Key characteristics of expository Bible teaching will be considered in order to better equip women who teach other women in various contexts, from small groups in the local church to larger gatherings of women in conference settings.

Power Through WeaknessTim Savage
These are troubled times. What we need is a demonstration of the Spirit and power (1 Corinthians 2:4). But how will such spiritual power come to expression? The answer is startling – through human weakness! Power through weakness: it is the paradox inherent in the cross of Jesus Christ. Do you see the pattern of the cross at work in you? Is the surpassing greatness of the power of God manifested in your ministry? This workshop will seek to plumb the riches of the biblical paradox of power through weakness.

Colin SmithPreaching a Christ to Whom We Can ComeColin Smith
Gospel preaching involves more than referring to Christ in a sermon. Its trajectory takes us into the world of grace. It presents a Christ to whom we can come. Observing that many in his day preached Christ only as an example to follow, Luther said, Rather ought Christ to be preached to the end that faith in Him may be established that he may not only be Christ, but be Christ for you and me. Luther’s observation is insightful for us. A moral example cannot help the weak, comfort the sorrowful, heal the broken-hearted, release the captive, or forgive the penitent. Our calling is to proclaim a Christ to whom sinners can come and in whom we may find life, hope, help and peace.

Round 2

Panel: What Should a Local Church Look Like?Tim Keller, Crawford Loritts, Mark Dever (participating chair)

Tim Keller Crawford Loritt Mark Dever

Paige Benton BrownMeaningful Ministry: Relationships Required?Paige Benton Brown
The ministries that make the headlines often involve a large pulpit or a large publisher. Are personal relationships even necessary, ever necessary to the most significant ministry? If so, what kinds of relationships? Organizational or organic? Discipleship or friendship? Mentoring or mutuality? This seminar will address the relational aspect of transformational gospel ministry.

They All Look Alike To Me: The Implications of a Christ-centered Identity on the Issue of Racial Reconciliation in the ChurchK. Edward Copeland
One day people from every nation, tribe, people and language will gather around the Throne in uninterrupted praise to the Lamb. Beyond pulpit exchanges, and perfunctory fellowships what does the Gospel demand of the Body of Christ in regards to racial harmony within the Body of Christ here and now? What is at stake when there is racial unrest or apparent lack of unity among local congregations or within a particular congregation? More importantly, how does the Gospel address this issue? This workshop will address the practical implications and outworkings of a Christ-centered identity on the issue of skin idolatry.

Writing Corporate Worship MusicKeith and Kristyn Getty
Behind the hymns. An interactive workshop introducing writing hymns and songs for the contemporary church with reflections — theological, lyrical, musical and practical on the writing of modern hymns — geared towards musicians and writers.

Joshua HarrisHumble OrthodoxyJosh Harris
Why is it that a commitment to sound doctrine is so often associated with an arrogant, divisive spirit? This workshop will examine the necessity of both orthodoxy and humility. Genuine orthodoxy—the heart of which is the death of God’s son for undeserving sinners—is the most humbling, human-pride smashing message in the world. And if we truly know the gospel of grace it will create in us a heart of humility and grace toward others.

Gary InrigPure Desire: Gospel-Centered Morality in a Sex-Saturated Society Gary Inrig
Modern society enshrines sexual expression, self-gratification and moral relativism as among its most cherished values. In many ways, our moral context is remarkably similar to that in which the gospel first appeared. Appeals to traditional morality or to moralistic self-effort to resist the tide are not only futile; they miss the power and purpose of the gospel. We will consider how the gospel calls us to embrace the goodness of God’s gift of sexuality while facing honestly the destructive impact of sin on our sexuality. In the light of the gospel, we not only recognize the sexual idols of our time, but experience the power of God that motivates us to sexual holiness both within and outside of marriage, empowers us in the fight against temptation, promotes joyful fidelity within marriage, and brings the hope of redemption and restoration in the face of our sins and failure.

The Feminist MistakeMary Kassian
Though we have entered a “post-feminist” era, feminism remains one of the most urgent issues facing Christians today. It infiltrates our homes and churches like an intravenous drug dripping into the veins of an unconscious patient. Feminism has become the default setting. Virtually all of us—to one extent or another–are feminists. In this session, Mary Kassian will trace the development of feminist thought and explore its radical impact on culture and the church. She will help you “connect the dots” to see how today’s male-female relationship dysfunction and gender confusion stem back to the faulty feminist premise we have subconsciously embraced.

Mixing Whites and Colors Without Making Them Run: Building Gospel- Centered, Intentionally-Multicultural Churches John Mahaffey
The immigration patterns in Canada and the United States for the past thirty years have dramatically changed the demographics of major urban centers. Some local churches have responded to this new reality by withdrawing and attempting to maintain culturally comfortable Christian fellowships or by supporting the development of ethno-specific churches. This workshop will address the challenges that racially, ethnically and culturally mixed communities present for local churches. Particular focus will be placed on how our belief in and application of the truth of the gospel can guide us in the building of intentionally-multicultural churches.

Help, I’m a Pastor’s Wife!: Making the Most of Every Opportunity in Marriage, Motherhood, and Church LifeCarolyn Mahaney
Most of us feel unprepared to be pastor’s wives. We’re offered no training, receive scant counsel, and lack godly role models. As a result, we’re often overwhelmed by the constant demands and unexpected trials of home and church life. But God’s Word provides all the wisdom and clarity we need to fulfill our role in a manner worthy of the gospel. In this session we will seek to discover from Scripture how to seize the best opportunities to help our husbands, nurture our children, and serve the women in our church.

Pastoring with Discernment: Applying the Gospel to the Hearts of Those You ServeC. J. Mahaney
More often than we realize, Christians have what John Owen describes as “hard thoughts about God.” They view God as distant, uninterested, even angry. Thoughts like these rob Christians of joy and leave them vulnerable to paralyzing introspection, legalism, condemnation, and despair. A wise pastor must discern where erroneous views of God the Father are troubling those he serves. And he must skillfully apply the gospel to their hearts through his preaching, counseling, leadership, and personal care.

Literary Beauty and Gospel Truth: Celebrating the Biblical Union Kathleen B. Nielson
We easily acknowledge both the literary beauty and the gospel truth of Scripture – but how do they work together? How do we avoid seeing the literary form as simply an adornment of the propositional truth, like a nutshell we crack to get to the nut? How do we receive the Bible’s truth through a metaphor… through parallel lines of poetry… through the very narrative structure of a story? Offered from the perspective of one trained in literature and now working mainly with women’s Bible study groups, this seminar will examine and celebrate the biblical union of form and content, and its implications for our own contexts of reading and teaching.

An Invitation to Hispanic Pastors and Would-Be PastorsJuan Sanchez
Join other Hispanic pastors as we gather to begin a conversation about the opportunity for Hispanic ministry in the United States. During our time together we will report on the dramatic growth of the Hispanic population in the United States, highlight some of the present opportunities for ministry among Hispanics and begin establishing a network of gospel-minded pastors, church planters, ministers and lay persons who long to see the gospel advanced among the Hispanic population in the United States and Canada.

Asian-American Christian Thought and Theological History: Pastoral Implications for Diversity and Innovation in a Multiracial ChurchStephen Um and Julius Kim
This seminar will examine the recent rise of Asian-American Christianity in the US. This will be accomplished through the lenses of history and theology as they impact identity development. Consideration will be given to the implications of the Gospel in an ever increasingly racially-diverse society. We intend to facilitate conversation with Asian-American Christian leaders and those who have Asian-Americans in their congregations.

Sandy WillsonGospel-Centered Pastoral LeadershipSandy Willson
The pastor is called to demonstrate and communicate the gospel in every area of his life. How does he do that in his leadership and management of ministry? In decision-making, in settling conflicts in the church, in counseling, in vision-casting, in planning, and in his integration of church and family life? The gospel-centered pastor must think carefully about all of his life and ministry.

Round 3
Paige Benton BrownWhen Despair Invades Gospel Work: Learning from Elijah Paige Benton Brown
You feel you have done everything right and everything goes wrong. Is it a lack of giftedness? A confusion of calling? An episode of persecution? Through the lens of one of God’s great “failures” in Scripture, we will look at facing failure and discouragement in gospel work. The seminar aims to address women in many avenues of service – both formal and informal, public and private – in order to apply biblical perspective to the battle against despair.

The Mission of the ChurchKevin DeYoung and Greg Gilbert
Determining the mission of the church is a deceptively difficult problem. In this session we argue that the mission of the church is adequately summarized in the Great Commissions. We strongly support deeds of mercy and love, but we must understand these in the right theological categories. If we rightly understand key concepts like kingdom, gospel, and social justice, we will be better able to understand what the mission of the church is. And just as importantly, we’ll be able to pursue obedience to Christ in a way that is more realistic, more freeing, and, in the long run, more fruitful.

Mark DriscollThe Spirit-Filled Missional Ministry of JesusMark Driscoll
In this session we will examine the work of the Holy Spirit in and around Jesus ministry in Luke’s gospel that includes empowering Jesus ministry of preaching, healing, and casting out demons. In so doing, we will work from the thesis that to be truly spirit filled and missional is to continue the ministry of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit as we see throughout the book of Acts which is Luke’s sequel.

Leading Corporate Worship MusicKeith and Kristyn Getty
Leading the hymns. This workshop extends some of the themes outlined in the previous workshop, now looking at selecting and leading songs during a service geared for worship. This workshop is aimed at leaders and pastors.

The Heart of the ExpositorKent Hughes
Biblical exposition has sometimes been characterized as a homiletic child of the Enlightenment (rationalistic, analytical and implicitly lifeless) — effecting left brained homilies for left-brained, flat-sided people. Nothing could be further from the truth! Authentic exposition demands a heart in which the raw edge of God’s Word has plowed deep, bleeding furrows. The preacher must first eat the bread that he would offer to others.

The Genesis of GenderMary Kassian
Gender Matters. It matters a great deal. Who we are and how we relate as men and women is an object lesson, a parable, that tells a very important story. And the story is not about US it’s about the gospel. In this session focused toward women, Mary Kassian will identify 12 markers from Genesis that reveal why and how God made men uniquely male and women uniquely female, and the implications for relationships today. She’ll explain why the trend toward gender fluidity is an assault on the gospel, and how we can reclaim the proclamatory power of our created design.

Erwin LutzerSubstitutes for the Gospel: A Modest Critique of Modern Evangelicalism Erwin Lutzer
This lecture begins with a brief summary of aberrations of the Gospel throughout church history, but primarily focuses on seven trends that often replace a Gospel centered ministry in the American church today. These substitutes will be briefly described, emphasizing that even what appears to be good can be the enemy of the best. The seminar concludes with a short prescription of how to return to the truths that made the church great.

Questioning EvangelismRandy Newman
The Gospel Coalition’s Theological Vision for Ministry includes the words, a truly gospel–centered church should be filled with members who winsomely address people’s hopes and aspirations with Christ and his saving work. How can we do that and help our people share the gospel in ways that truly engage outsiders in our skeptical age? This seminar offers insights from Scripture and suggestions of ways to use questions, dialogue, and conversations to proclaim the good news.

Trellis and VineTony Payne and Colin Marshall
How does the Great Commission apply to every disciple and every church? Do our church programs and organizations make us too busy to focus on people? Are we relying too much on our ministers to be doing the work of disciple-making? How can we learn to make disciples wherever we are, whether in the home, in the church or in our community? What are simple ways of helping others follow Christ through sacrificial love, sharing the Word of God and prayer? How can we actively encourage one another to follow Christ during our Sunday gatherings? How can we reach those who would never come to church on Sunday? These are some of the questions addressed in the Trellis and Vine workshop. The aim is simple: to equip ministry leaders with the biblical foundations, vision and resources to train co-workers in gospel ministry in a local ministry context.

Seizing Global Gospel Opportunities: Why and How You and Your Church Can Get Involved Michael Oh
The face of global Christianity has undergone remarkable transformation over the past 100 years. This workshop will take participants on a tour of the various regions of the world highlighting both the significant advances in the spread of the gospel as well as the astounding lack of gospel witness among a significant proportion of the world’s peoples. Practical suggestions on how the individual Christian and the local church can have a global gospel impact will be presented.

One-on-One Discipleship: Grass-Roots Church Growth Jenny Salt
How will training Christians to disciple others help grow the church? How might such personal discipleship both bring people to believe the gospel and grow them up in the gospel? What are the best biblical methods for one-on-one discipleship, in a variety of contexts? Having done it, taught it, and watched it work in her homeland of Australia, Jenny Salt will lay forth the what and why of one-on-one discipleship, particularly in the context of women’s ministry.

Fostering a Praying ChurchScotty Smith
The gospel frees us from both pragmatic praying—the burden of trying to motivate and manipulate a reluctant God, and from presumptive non-praying—the error of assuming God’s sovereignty marginalizes the importance of our intercession. This workshop will offer reflections, conversation and suggestions on how a greater preoccupation with the gospel will lead to a greater emphasis on prayer in the local church—starting with the leaders. Topics covered will include
Learning how to pray the Scriptures wearing the lens of the gospel; the intercessory ministries of Jesus and the Holy Spirit; and cultivating a culture of gospel-praying in our churches and for the community.

Biblical Theology: What It Is and Why It MattersStephen Um and Richard Lints
The story of Jesus is the story of the whole Bible. And the whole Bible is the narrative of the whole gospel. In this seminar Professors Lints and Um consider the nature, scope, and rationale for thinking about Biblical Theology as the story of the gospel unfolded across the whole of Scripture. The progressive movement of the narrative of redemption helps to understand the gospel with greater depth and with greater practical value. They will follow out the ways in which the Bible intertwines the themes of kingdom, covenant, and temple from Genesis to Revelation. And they will consider why Biblical Theology matters in the ministries of preaching, teaching, and mission.

Keith and Kristyn Getty
Keith and Kristyn Getty have been at the forefront of the modern hymn movement over the past decade, bridging the gap between the traditional and the contemporary. They currently live in the United States where they have just finished their second album together, Awaken the Dawn, a collection of hymns that takes believers on a lyrical journey of grace and hope for all the nations. This follows their first collection of hymns, the 2006 release In Christ Alone. Kristyn’s lilting, crystal-clear voice is an ideal contrast to Keith’s richly melodic piano arrangements and accompaniment. An acclaimed soloist in her own right, today she is both an accomplished songwriter and artist, having penned children’s musicals and been featured with Christian music’s Margaret Becker and Celtic artist Joanne Hogg on the New Irish Hymns series, among her diverse credits. A multi-talented instrumentalist and composer, Keith first learned to play guitar, but later studied flute, including a summer masterclass under renowned Irish flautist Sir James Galway. Ironically, it was Keith’s piano not flute arrangements that most intrigued Galway and helped open the world of the music industry to him. Keith has since orchestrated and arranged more than 200 projects for recordings, concerts, theater, television and film, including arrangements for Michael W. Smith’s 2004 Healing Rain album, as well as producing and composing (with Kristyn) various projects for the internationally renowned African Children’s Choir. Though he was raised in a Christian home in Northern Ireland, it was ultimately a yearlong study of the life of Christ during his time at university that affirmed and crystallized Keith’s faith. Since then, he has nurtured a passion to communicate the basic tenets of the gospel through music in a universally appealing way.
