Owens:

Thank you for your comments. I did not mean to imply that all non-African American parents allow their children to run wildly in stores! (See how complicated this "race" thing is, even when we are attempting to be sensitive!) If African Americans did not have the fear-of-being-suspected-by-the-law-factor, I wonder what allowances we would give to our children in the stores.

Two books that I am sure you have in your library that have shaped my knowledge of the problem of race in the American Church are

Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America by Michael O. Emerson and Christian Smith

-and-

United by Faith: The Multiracial Congregation As an Answer to the Problem of Race by Curtiss Paul DeYoung, Michael O. Emerson, George Yancey, and Karen Chai Kim

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your dialog with Dr. Russell Moore this week. In response to your post of June 30th...I am one white father who has never allowed his white children to run wild in public. I am embarassed to see any child (mostly spoiled white children) behave the way they do in public. And I share your observation that mothers and fathers in the African American community have taught their children well on how to behave in public.
